Insurance is your financial plan's safety net. It protects you and your family by providing you with a financial cushion from unforeseen events. The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has agreements with leading insurance companies to provide you and your family cover based on your needs and circumstances.
Life & income insurance
The New Zealand Defence Force provides an insurance package for all its NZDF Regular and Reserve Forces and Civilian (permanent and fixed term) members. The Member Insurance Benefits Programme (MIBP) has been tailored by Aon, NZDF’s insurance brokers.
It is structured in a number of Tiers of cover:

Tier 1: Automatic benefits for Regular Forces, Reserve Forces and Civilian members
As a Regular Force or a Civilian member , you’re automatically provided with valuable protection under MIBP Teir 1. These benefits are fully funded by NZDF.
Life, Terminal Illness & Physical Loss
- Life, Terminal Illness & Physical Loss.
- $300,000 benefit for death or terminal Illness.
- Up to $50,000 physical loss cover.
- 24/7, world-wide cover up to age 80.
- No exclusion for belligerent operations or war or terrorism.
- A 15% discount on premiums when you take out a new ANZ Life & Living Insurance policy.
Income protection
- Protection if you’re temporarily or permanently unable to perform your usual occupation as a result of illness or injury.
- Receive up to 75% of your base salary plus military factor after a 90-day waiting period (up to a maximum annual salary of $160,000).
- Benefit payable fortnightly in advance for up to two years.
- 24/7, worldwide cover up to age 70.
As a Reserve Force member, you are automatically provided with protection under MIBP Tier 1. These benefits are fully funded by NZDF:
- $300,000 Life benefit – this benefit is payable in the event of death by accident occurring while on NZDF duty or going to and from that duty.
- Up to $50,000 physical loss cover. From accident events only while on NZDF duty.
- An Accident Compensation (ACC) top up benefit – This is a top up of any shortfall in ACC payments with regard to your combined NZDF and Civilian earnings from injuries arising while on NZDF duty.

Tier 2: Additional protection for Regular Force, Reserve Force and Civilian members
MIBP Tier 2 provides a range of additional and extended benefits you can choose to supplement your Tier 1 protection.
When you join NZDF, you can apply for Tier 2 benefits up to certain levels without having to undergo a health assessment, provided you apply within 60 days of your start date and can answer ‘no’ to two health questions. The current limits under this rule are:- Life and Terminal Illness - $300,000. (includes $50,000 Physical Loss).
- Income Protection – Extend the Tier 1, 2-year benefit payment period to 5 years.
- Critical Illness cover of up to $60,000.
NZDF members can apply for Tier 2 benefits at any other time, subject to health assessment. The exception to this is when special windows to joining are offered (each 1 October from 2025).
Additional Life & Terminal Illness available under tier 2
- Apply for up to $1,000,000.
- 24/7, world-wide* cover up to age 80.
- Belligerent operations cover is available (up to $300,000, after 6 months of the policy start date).
- Includes another $50,000 physical loss cover.
Extend your Income Protection
- Extend your Tier 1 two-year benefit payment period to 5 years.
- Extend your benefit payment period to age 70.
- 24/7, world-wide* cover up to age 70.
Add Critical Illness Insurance for extra protection
- A lump sum benefit for payable for diagnosis of 39 conditions including heart attack, stroke, and cancers (subject to policy terms and conditions).
- Add multiples of $5,000 up to $500,000.
- 24/7, world-wide* cover up to age 70
Your MIBP Tier 2 insurance is between you, Aon and the insurance provider and not with NZDF. If you leave NZDF you can continue your insurance by simply continuing to pay the monthly Direct Debits. Please contact Aon if you leave NZDF, as your premiums may reduce, and we can help ensure your insurance is right for you.
All Tier 2 premiums are payable by monthly direct debit.

Tier 3: Benefits for the partners of NZDF members
MIBP Tier 3 gives your spouse or partner a range of optional benefits, provided they are not a member of NZDF.
When you join NZDF, your spouse or partner can apply for Tier 3 benefits up to certain levels without having to undergo a health assessment, provided they apply within 60 days of your start date, and they can answer ‘no’ to two health questions. The current limits under this rule are:
- Life and Terminal Illness - $150,000.
- Critical Illness cover of up to $20,000 which must be taken in conjunction with the life cover. Benefits are offset against the life cover.
NZDF members’ spouses or partners can apply for Tier 3 benefits at any time, subject to health assessment.
Life & Terminal illness
- Multiples of $50,000 up to $1,000,000.
- 24/7, world-wide* cover up to age 80.
Critical Illness Insurance – accelerated payment of life insurance
- A lump sum benefit for payable for diagnosis of 39 conditions including heart attack, stroke, and cancers *
- Add multiples of $10,000 up to $500,000
- 24/7, world-wide* cover up to age 70
Life & Terminal illness
- Multiples of $50,000 up to $1,000,000.
- 24/7, world-wide* cover up to age 80.

Tier 4: Benefits for ex NZDF members.
If you were previously a member of NZDF you are now able to access the Tier 2 benefits of Life & Terminal Illness, Critical Illness and Income Protection Insurance for yourself and you can do this via Tier 4. These benefits are funded by you.

Tier 5: Funeral Cover Benefit for the Defence community
A Funeral Plan, funded by you is available to members of the Defence community. You are a member of the Defence community if you are or any of your family members have been members of NZDF.

Provided by Tower, the Inforce domestic Insurance Scheme provides insurance for your contents while you are living in barracks, and also for your home, contents, and motor. It is designed for your specific needs as NZDF military and civilian personnel and extends to those of you who are retired, or serve as Territorial/Reserve Force personnel, and your families.

Barracks Contents Insurance
Covers personal effects, and any military equipment and gear you are issued with, while you are living in barracks. We are offering – cover up to $20,000.00 at the price of a premium of $10,000.00

Covers home contents, personal effects and any military gear and equipment you are issued with, at your flat or residence, or while temporarily stored elsewhere.

Home Insurance
An insurance policy for a house owned by you (residential or rented), as well as a policy for additionally owned homes such as investment properties and holiday homes.

Motor Insurance
An insurance policy for your car.
Key Inforce Domestic Insurance Scheme highlights include:
- 10% automatic premium discount for all Inforce policy holders.
- Any kit or military equipment issued to you is covered under your contents policy as part of your personal effects.
- Special extensions to the policy covers, such as automatic storage cover when you are posted are provided, recognising the uniqueness of your working environment.
- One premium for Barracks Contents cover, regardless of your base or camp or payment frequency, and up to $20,000.00 of cover for the equivalent price of $10,000.00 of cover.
- You don’t have to tell us if you move from one base or camp to another until renewal.
- Multi-policy discounts, and a range of payment frequency options to choose from.

Medical insurance
New Zealand Defence Force values your health and wellbeing and provide you with access to health insurance from Southern Cross at discounted rates. Cover highlights include:
- Lower premiums for defence force personnel and their whānau.
- Only pay for the first two children (under 21 years) on your policy* – the rest are free!
- Members of the Regular Forces can take out a special low cost ‘non-claiming’ policy from Southern Cross. Thus, protecting any future pre-existing conditions arising from the date of your joining. In addition, you get all the loyalty benefits that come with being a Southern Cross member, but at a lower cost because you’re not claiming for treatment while you’re with the NZDF. Leisure Travel Cover
Allianz Partners provides travel insurance cover at a 10% discounted rate for currently serving and retired members of the Defence community (including spouses and dependent children) undertaking leisure travel.
The policy covers NZDF members currently residing in New Zealand, as well as:
- NZDF members deployed and based overseas, in which case the policy will cover you from the place of deployment and the return to that place or New Zealand. To access this, you need to follow the Allianz website link below and use the code “NZDF”, you will receive an NZDF endorsement with your policy (as well as getting the discount) which gives the deployed member an exemption from the requirement to leave from and return to NZ.
- NZDF member deployed and based overseas, with spouse and/or dependent children residing in New Zealand. Cover can be taken under this policy; however, two separate policies will need to be issued.
There are two international plan options*:

The Essentials Plan
- Selected cover for epidemic and pandemic diseases such as Covid-19.
- Cover for medical and repatriation expenses.

- Increased cover for specified high-value items (Comprehensive only).
